How often do I need to replace my dentures?
The Canadian Dental Association recommends replacing your dentures every 5 years. Dentures do not change but your mouth and gums are constantly changing. Wearing dentures for more than five years without having them checked could be harmful to your health.
What indications should I look for to see if my prosthesis needs to be checked?
- Sore and irritated tissue
- Problems chewing some foods, indigestion problems
- Thinning lips, sagging mouth, changing facial features
- Prosthesis is loose, falling out when speaking or laughing
- Discoloured or has an odour
- Softening of tissue
- Headaches, neck or ear pain
- Bone (ridge) loss
- Your dentures or partials are kept in your pocket most of the time
When should I have my dentures relined or rebased?
Shrinkage in your tissues and bone affect the fit of your denture. It should be relined or rebased every 2 to 3 years to maintain healthy tissues. If your denture is an immediate placement it is very important to have it relined or rebased after the first year.
How long does it take to make a denture?
It takes 4 to 5 appointments to make your denture. Depending on how available you are for the appointments
it will take from one to three weeks to finish your denture.
